KOH SAMUI THAILAND
KOH SAMUI
Getting to Koh Samui
Koh Samui is a stunning island located in the Gulf of Thailand.
Getting there from Bangkok is easy. The most convenient option is to fly directly to Samui Airport (USM). Bangkok Airlines offer flights to and from Bangkok. Alternatively, you can take a train or bus to Surat Thani, and then ferry to Koh Samui. Given the flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui is just over 1 hour our preference is to fly direct. Make sure you book as early as possible with Bangkok Airways to obtain the best price, it can be expensive if you leave it too late to book. If you are flying from Australia or other countries you can also fly direct from Singapore to Koh Samui. Samui Airport is one of the most beautiful airports in the world and they also provide great snacks in the departure lounge..lol
Koh Samui offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit every budget and preference. Here are some of the most popular areas:
CHAWENG
The heart of Koh Samui, Chaweng boasts a lively atmosphere, with plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. It’s perfect for those seeking a vibrant nightlife and a wide range of activities.
LAMAI
Lamai is where we spent most of our time while visiting Koh Samui. A more relaxed alternative to Chaweng, Lamai offers beautiful beaches, beach front restaurants, and a laid-back vibe. It’s a great choice for families and couples looking for a balance of relaxation and entertainment.
BOPHUT
Known for its charming fisherman’s village atmosphere, Bophut has a mix of boutique shops, trendy restaurants, and luxury resorts. It’s ideal for those who appreciate a more upscale experience.
NATHON
The island’s administrative capital, Nathon is a bustling town with a local market, ferry pier, and a good selection of restaurants. It’s a convenient base for catching the ferry.
BANG RAK
Home to the iconic Big Buddha, Bang Rak is not the best beach for swimming however you will find some nice beach bars and restaurants along the waterfront. Bang Rak is where you will also find the piers if heading to Koh Phangan.
CHOENG MON
Located north of Chaweng, Choeng Mon is a quieter alternative with a long stretch of sandy beach, perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
Night Markets
Koh Samui has several night markets to explore. The Fisherman’s Village Night Market in Bophut is a popular choice, offering a wide range of local handicrafts, clothing, and delicious street food.
Lamai has a small family friendly night market with street food stalls selling both Western and Thai options. The market is open nightly and is a popular spot to listen to some live music while enjoying a beer or two.
Sights to See
Beyond its beautiful beaches, Koh Samui offers several interesting sights to explore:
Big Buddha - A must-visit landmark, the Big Buddha is a magnificent statue overlooking the island.
Hin Ta and Hin Yai known as Grandpa and Grandma Rocks - can be found at the southern end of Lamai Beach. They've been a source of giggles for years since the rock formation look kinda like male and female private parts.
Na Muang Waterfalls - Escape the heat and enjoy a refreshing swim at these picturesque waterfalls.
Wat Khunaram - Home to Koh Samui's mummified monk, is an unusual sight yet it offers a unique insight into Buddhist and Thai culture.
Sea View Restaurant - A bit of a crazy drive up the mountain to reach the restaurant. Once you arrive you will be amazed by the view. We enjoyed a delicious lunch, try the Pad Kra Pao goong, it was the fantastic. You can also swim in the onsite pool or take a stroll around the bazaar dinosaur statue garden.
